Sr.
Jane Mankaa
Sr. Jane Mankaa felt
called by God to serve the poor, but she was not sure how. Then one
evening, she saw a small boy sleeping on a street in Yaounde, the
capitol of Cameroon.
“I asked him why he
was sleeping there and he told me that’s where he lived,” she said.
“I brought him some rice, and when I came back to see him the next
morning, there were ten other boys with him.” She learned that the
street children were all orphans whose parents had died of AIDS. “I
knew then that caring for these children was what God wanted me to
do.”
It has taken years of hard work, but Sr.
Jane’s vision is being realized. Children are now being cared for at
the Good Shepherd Home in Bamenda, Cameroon, where they are cared for by
the Benedictine Sisters of Bethany, the religious community that Sr.
Jane founded. Donation
