Outreach: Calvary in Action
From actively assisting in our regular Sunday Worship to providing others within the community with pastoral care and meals, to serving those outside our community who are in need, service and outreach are key parts of our mission.

Women of Calvary
All women of the church are automatically members of Women of Calvary, our branch of the Episcopal Church Women of the National Counsel of the Episcopal Church. The group sponsors events that encourage fellowship within Calvary, as well as those that bring in funds for service and outreach. Contact: Kate Getzendanner   More  Calvary Cookbook

Apostles' House
Among the activities Calvary participates with Apostles' House in Newark: Our youth groups are part of an annual Halloween Party there, the YAC group sponsors the Christmas Gift Tree every year. Our annual Lenten mite box collection and "Essentials For Living" generally benefit Apostles' House, and the children come to Summit every year for an Easter Egg Hunt with Calvary's children. Map

Apostles House Food Pantry      Shopping List
This Diocese of Newark program distributes a lot of food to the needy. Bring non-perishable food to the Church and leave it in the food baskets in the back of the church. Our donations have been going to the pantry at Apostles' House for several years.   Contact: Dick and Brenda Ash.

Bridges Ministry
An ecumenical ministry, drawing on volunteers in churches across Summit to prepare bag lunches for the homeless in New York City.

Blood Drive
Since 1995, Calvary has hosted a blood drive in the Parish Hall, usually mid-May. Parishioners publicize the drive, contact donors, work up a schedule, bake cookies for the donors and prepare dinner for the workers. Contact Tod and Barb Packer

Christmas Dinner
More than 25 volunteers prepare and serve Christmas Dinner to 70 members of our community, including residents from Summit’s Senior Housing. Contact: Tom Killian

Christmas Gift Tree
During Advent, Young Adults at Calvary (YAC) set up a Christmas tree in the church and gather gifts for the residents of Apostles’ House in Newark, at their facility serving temporarily displaced families. In 2010, ten van loads of presents were delivered.

Good Shepherd Home - Cameroon
Founded by Sr. Jane Mankaa and the Benedictine Sisters of Bethany, the Good Shepherd Home is dedicated to educating and caring for children of the streets in Cameroon. Many of these children have lost their parents to the AIDS epidemic. The Home provides a safe environment for them to grow into healthy young men and women.    More

Habitat for Humanity
People from across the Summit area are coming together to address one of the city’s most challenging problems-the lack of affordable housing, particularly for first-time home buyers. This affordable housing project is a collaborative effort  between the City of Summit, the Summit Affordable Housing Corporation and Morris Habitat for Humanity to construct a two-story six-plex of for-sale condominiums on Morris  Avenue near Orchard Street and the historic Wallace Chapel AME Zion Church.  More  Contact: Rick Ostberg

HomeFirst
HomeFirst hosted homeless families of Union County and Calvary participated by assisting at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Summit. However, in response to the changing needs of local homeless families, the Homefirst Interfaith Housing and Family Service’s Board of Trustees decided to bring Homefirst to a close. The program is in the process of being reconstituted. Contact: Scott Winn

Office Volunteers
To keep Calvary running smoothly, volunteers help our office manager with a variety of tasks, like answering the phone at staff meetings, getting out reminder cards and children's bulletins and welcome letters to newcomers. Biggest group of all is the faithful crew who helps assemble the Canticle, our parish newsletter, for mailing every month. Contact: The Parish Office (908) 277-1814

Pastoral Care Committee
The pastoral care committee seeks to model Christ's love of neighbor by providing care and support when members of the parish are in need.  The committee provides care through prayer and home communion, visitation and telephone calls, meals for the sick and bereaved, and providing transportation and making errands.  Contact: Brenda Ash, Gloria Crum, Carol Graham, Pam Kuhn, David Farrand, Audrey Byrne

Prayer Chain
A group of parishioners offer daily prayers for Calvary Church, our clergy and bishops, and the special concerns of Calvary members and others.

Publicity
The team
distributes notices to the local papers so our community can learn more about Calvary and its ministries and activities.

Summit Helping Its People (SHIP)
The Summit Interfaith Clergy Fellowship task force of clergy, public officials and concerned citizens assists homeless and at-risk homeless not served by other programs.
