Choosing Your Ministry
I’m a cradle Episcopalian. I’ve served a
couple of terms on the Vestry and have been Junior Warden. I’ve been
financial chair and worked on stewardship. I currently chair the Heritage
Funds Committee.
In EFM you learn about
choosing your ministry. My life has not been choices. Things have just
happened—and not the way I had planned. God has been good to me. In 1992,
I had a medical event that sent a clear message to take down the stress
level in my life. I retired at 53. The day I retired, Susan Watts asked me
to chair the search committee for Calvary’s new rector. It took us 15
months to find Chris Brdlik. During the process, I became close to Bishop
Spong. This led to my serving as Executive Director of Planned Giving for
Diocese, an assignment that included working with 166 parishes.
I had to organize what I
thought about stewardship and I urge others to do the same. Organize your
philanthropy. You need to be intentional and set down what is most
important to you. I’ve chosen my five important charities: education,
homelessness, Calvary Church. St. Phillips Academy and inner city
scholarships. Calvary needs all of our support, not just from major
donors, but from all of us. Part of our challenge is to get everyone’s
participation.
