Taking Care of the Grounds
One evening, after having
served on Altar Guild for less than a year, I received a call from the
Rev. Bill Strain, saying that the current Directress of Altar Guild had
resigned. My first thought was how kind he was to share that information;
however, there was more to the story. He wanted me to take over as
Directress. I did, and various things came along after that.
When I served on the
Vestry, I was in charge of grounds. Since I’ve always been interested in
horticulture, this came naturally. Taking care of the grounds turned into
taking care of the buildings as well. When my term on the Vestry was
complete, Calvary created the position of Junior Warden in charge of
buildings and grounds. I have served in this position for many years. It
has been a rewarding journey, and I am grateful to those who put their
trust in me.
I love Calvary very much.
The church is beautiful. I know every inch of it and the four other
buildings on the campus. Taking care of five buildings, most of which are
more than 100 years old, is quite a challenge. Our budget for 2005 for the
five buildings is $20,0000, which covers everything from major maintenance
to appliance repairs. It’s a challenge to make that work.
Giving to Calvary makes
me feel closer to God. It’s simply the right thing to do.
