HomeFirst
A
home-grown organization begun in Summit in 1989, HomeFirst (which began
as the Interfaith Homeless Families Network) has spread across
the country to include 2,000 congregations. Its national office is
in Summit’s old fire station.
HomeFirst unites the religious community in an effort to give the homeless
overnight lodging, mobilizing local community resources such as
synagogues and churches. Congregations provide temporary quarters in
their buildings for three to five families for periods of one or two
weeks twice a year. During the day the guests go to their jobs or are
helped to find jobs and housing while the children attend their schools.
While the HomeFirst cannot solve all problems, the support of caring people in
the participating churches can make a traumatic time easier to cope
with.
Calvary parishioners serve as hosts at St. John’s Lutheran Church
twice a year, by cooking food to deliver to the
church, serving food, socializing with guests and staying overnight in
the church.
Many Calvary volunteers have found it a useful experience to get to know
adults and children who are, for one reason or another (loss of job,
domestic violence, fire, eviction) temporarily homeless. The families
have been screened so that volunteers will not have to deal with serious
problems.
